Short-term loan

What it is, and who it suits

A short-term loan is a term loan compressed: less money, repaid over three to eighteen months, and decided largely on how the business is trading now rather than on years of accounts. Three months of bank statements and an ID are most of what it asks for.

It asks the least of any loan here — three months trading, a credit score of 550 — and it is priced for that. It is the right shape for something short that pays for itself: an order to fulfil, a payroll to cover, a repair to make. It is the wrong shape for anything that takes years to earn back.

What it is for

Six things short-term loan pays for

Emergencies
A breakdown or a cost nobody planned for.
Large orders
Buying in the materials for a job before it is paid.
Supplier terms
Taking an early-payment discount.
The season ahead
Stock and staff for the busy months.
Payroll
Covering wages across a cash flow gap.
New contracts
Starting the work the contract pays for.

The bar

What a lender will look for

  • At least 3 months in business
  • Personal credit score of 550 or higher
  • At least $50,000 in annual revenue
  • The business actively trading

A minimum is where an assessment starts, not a promise of an offer.

And what it will ask to see

  • Three months of bank statements
  • A business license or registration
  • Government-issued ID
  • Basic information about the business
